How to File for Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Benefits

The Process to Apply for Unemployment Benefits in Pennsylvania

The unemployment application process can be complicated and difficult. When a person has just lost their job they may have a lot on their mind and it is not easy to focus on filling out an unemployment application. Luckily, there are several ways in which Pennsylvania allows someone to file their unemployment claim. Below we discuss each way in which Pennsylvania allows you to file for benefits and the benefits of each.

Online

This is the most efficient and convenient way to apply for benefits. Pennsylvania has set up an online application process and it can make things much easier for the applicant. You will scroll from page to page filling out your application. Make sure you read the instructions closely and have a strong internet connection so that you do not lose the information that you have already entered. We recommend setting aside at least two hours to fill out your claim, although many people can finish in less time than that. One of the largest advantages of online applications is that the applicant will have the time they need to sit and think through their answers. Also, the application will be reviewed quickly as the unemployment service center will receive the application as soon as it is submitted.

Paper Application

Pennsylvania offers a paper application for those applicants who prefer to fill out their forms with pen in hand. This process has many of the benefits of the online process as you have time to sit and think about your answers. However, this also presents opportunities for applicants to make mistakes. An applicant may write with bad handwriting and then they can expect a call back from the unemployment service center in order to clarify. Also. The applicants have to wait for the mail to be sent, delivered and received before their claim will be reviewed. This process is slower than the online application, but it does allow someone to easily step away in the middle of the application and come back to it later.

Telephone

You may also enter your claim by calling the statewide unemployment compensation phone number. This number will put you in touch with a state employee who will ask you a series of questions and walk you through the process. This process may sometimes be quicker than applying online, but online applications will allow an applicant the time they need to think through their answers, whereas the telephone process will put pressure on an applicant to answer quickly. We recommend this option if you do not have online access and if a written application is not easily accessible for you.

Videophone Service

This service exists exclusively for individuals who use American Sign Language. This option is available only at certain designated times and days.

Conclusion

Applying for unemployment benefits following the loss of a job can be difficult and confusing. Pennsylvania allows applicants to file with an online application, paper application, telephone or videophone service. We recommend using the online application as it is quick and it allows time for applicants to think through their answers.
